Claiborne Jubilee to Honor Families on the Homefront

The families of those serving in the country’s military services will be guests of honor at the 2004 Claiborne Jubilee to be held Saturday, May 15, Armed Forces Day.

The Jubilee planning committee would like to be able to recognize military families during the day, and would appreciate anyone with family in the service to contact them with names of the service people as well as any family members who can attend the festivities. Submit information online, call Cynthia Steele at 927-2566, or mail to 309 North Main St., Homer, LA 71040.

All events will be held on the courthouse lawn or in buildings around the town square. In addition to the traditional sidewalk art show, plans are underway for children’s art activities, a quilt show, flower arranging demonstrations, musical performances, and cloggers.

Anyone interested in entering the art show or renting a booth as a vendor should also call 927-2566 to request more information. Entry forms are posted below.

The Third Saturday in May is now celebrated as Armed Forces Day, a day to show our appreciation for all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country, you and me!

These brave Men and Women, training physically and mentally to insure success in any mission, can be called upon to perform any mission for our freedom and country.

Prior to August 31, 1949 each branch of the military had their own day of celebration, the then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson created "Armed Forces Day". The first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950.

The theme of Jubilee 2004 is Honoring the Homefront. A program of patriotic music is planned and presentations will be made to families of those serving in the military who are attending.

The school students of Claiborne Parish have been busy designing a special gift for the families of those serving in the military who will be attending the Claiborne Jubilee. Each student was given the task of designing a plaque depicting What Home Means To Me and winners have been selected from among elementary, junior high, and high school students.

The overall winner of all the dozens of designs submitted will have the winning design replicated on star shaped plaques to be presented to each family at the ceremony on the courthouse lawn May 15. All entries will be on display that day and the elementary, junior high, and high school awards will be announced and prizes given at that time.

Whether or not a student entered this contest, they are encouraged to enter the Art Show and to pre-register through his teacher by May 10 or directly to the Jubilee at 309 North Main, Homer, LA. Messages may be left at 927-2566 and calls will be returned.

Artists are urged to come for the day and bring materials to demonstrate their art. Pack a picnic or share in the delicious foods to be available from vendors around the Square. The ancient oaks on the courthouse lawn provide a delightful place to spend the day, where you can visit area antique and gift shops and the Ford Museum or take a short drive to Lake Claiborne State Park.
