The Claiborne Alternative School offers an alternative form of education of those students who are at risk or who have dropped out of school. The program is designed to build basic academic skills, better communication skills, improve self-esteem, and improve study skills. Because students learn at different rates, the curriculum includes teacher-directed instruction, self-paced computer assisted instruction, and independent study. This format allows high school students to earn credits and middle schools students to work within a prescribed curriculum at an appropriate rate, in an appropriate manner, and without time constraints. The primary purpose of the program is to provide services to meet the needs of students that are at risk of dropping out of school because of family problems, pregnancy, lack of motivation, discipline problems, attendance requirements, academic achievement, and various other reasons.
To enroll in the alternative school, the principal must refer the student. The school day is from 8:30 AM to 2:15 PM for classroom instruction. The school is in session for nine months and observes Claiborne Parish policies and calendar. Classroom instruction is on an individualized instructional basis. Diagnostic testing, and prescriptive, individualized instructional methods are used for each student. The teacher uses computer assisted learning programs, supplemented with other methods and materials to enhance student learning. State approved curriculum guides are followed and students advance at their own pace. Student progress is reported through report cards. Yearly parent conferences are held in conjunction with the procedures set for arranging them. If a student is not making satisfactory progress, he/she will receive counseling and a letter will be sent to his/her parents. Meeting daily with the student permits monitoring of them and provides for a good assessment for progress.
